Course Overview

This introductory course is tailored for “newcomers,” defined broadly to include individuals from diverse backgrounds currently residing in South Korea, international students pursuing their studies here, and naturalized citizens. The course aims to introduce key episodes of Korea’s modern and contemporary history in an accessible manner, thereby assisting these individuals in understanding, adapting to, and navigating life and education within Korean society.

Learning Objectives

1. Examine the pivotal historical events that have shaped contemporary Korea.
2. Comprehend Korea’s modern and contemporary history through diverse lenses, including its economic, social, and cultural spheres. 
3. Identify the current challenges confronting South Korean society and compare them to those in the students’ native countries.
