Urban Space and Residential Culture in Korea
Course Introduction
This course takes a historical approach to Korean urban space and residential culture from premodern times to the present and overviews the background in which Korean urban life has been shaped from the present point of view. The course reconstructs the “Korean life” by comprehensively examining the physical and spatial framework of cities and architecture and the living culture as a whole.
Learning Objectives
∙ Understand traditional Korean housing patterns.
∙ Learn about the impact of the influx of new housing and urban culture during the process of modernization on the spatial composition of Korean society.
∙ Examine the background of today’s housing types and the composition of urban space, and discuss their meaning.
Course Structure
This course consists of a total of 8 weeks. The lectures in each week are organized into three to six videos by topic.
