Issues in Ancient History and the Quest for Historical Methodologies

This course provides a systematic examination of ancient Korean history, beginning with core research debates and progressing to the use of excavated textual and archaeological materials, the critical review of existing theories, and the application of new methodologies in the digital age. Furthermore, it reaffirms the importance of research methodologies that comprehensively integrate historical texts, epigraphy, wooden slips, and archaeological data and highlights the necessity for interdisciplinary approaches, ultimately outlining future directions and challenges in the study of Korean ancient history.

1) Understand the major theories established in the study of ancient Korean history and the background behind their formation within a historiographical context.
2) Examine how epigraphic data, wooden slips, and archaeological materials revise and reconstruct traditional text-centric historical narratives.
3) Critically analyze the core debates and research perspectives concerning the ruling systems, political structures, and social conditions in studies of Goguryeo, Baekje, Silla, and the Lelang Commandery.    
4) Drawing upon digital technologies and new perspectives, students will explore the potential for expansion and future challenges in the study of ancient Korean history,
